Gaining more momentum within this issue is the declining participation of the female workforce; the <strong>Women\u2019s Great Resignation <\/strong>or a more modishly known portmanteau, the <strong>Shecession<\/strong>. The same was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chieflearningofficer.com\/2022\/01\/03\/using-flexible-leadership-development-solutions-to-combat-the-shecession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified<\/a> by C. Nicole Mason, President and Chief Executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/media\/press-hits\/the-coronavirus-recession-is-a-she-cession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Women\u2019s Policy Research<\/a>, and the woman who coined the term <strong>she-cession<\/strong>, in reference to the 2008 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2009\/07\/its-not-just-a-recession-its-a-mancession\/20991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mancession.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Women accounted for 55% of the 20.5 million jobs lost (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/09\/us\/unemployment-coronavirus-women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NY Times<\/a>), with higher unemployment rates for women of color (Black women 16.4%, Hispanic \u2013 20.2 %). This brings into question an even bigger gap in diversity and inclusion moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>As highlighted in a recent BLS report; The <strong>Labor Force Participation Rate for women<\/strong> was <strong>57%<\/strong> in January 2022; the lowest recorded since 1988 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/nwlc.org\/resource\/january-jobs-day-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NWLC<\/a>. Many had to consider leaving work altogether to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/coloradan\/2021\/07\/02\/shecession-how-pandemic-impacting-womens-careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backup parent<\/a> when it became impossible to juggle closure of schools, daycare duties, work, and managing housework on top of everything else. Stress and exhaustion are one of the main contributors that women had to consider when exiting the workforce. More troublesome was the plight of single mothers, whose unemployment rates <a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/QF-Breadwinner-Mothers-by-Race-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tripled<\/a> compared to men.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>One in three women has considered leaving behind their careers in the past year alone <\/em>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/wiw-report.s3.amazonaws.com\/Women_in_the_Workplace_2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McKinsey Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/11\/16\/great-resignation-hitting-these-industries-hardest\/\">hardest-hit industries<\/a> have the highest number of female employees; leisure, hospitality, healthcare, education, etc. This crisis has set women back a decade from the jobs and roles they had gained over time \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/09\/us\/unemployment-coronavirus-women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NY Times<\/a>. According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/08\/why-women-dont-apply-for-jobs-unless-theyre-100-qualified\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBR study<\/a>, women don\u2019t apply for a job unless they feel they are 100% qualified for it. The longer women stay out of work, the harder it will get for them to return (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/jan\/04\/shecession-women-economy-c-nicole-mason-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a>); therefore, measures must be taken to mitigate long-term gender inequality effects on the workforce; already present and accelerated by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, women earned 82% of what men earned for similar positions, requiring an extra 42 days of work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/05\/25\/gender-pay-gap-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fill the wage gap<\/a>. To re-vitalize the women workforce, incentives have to be given to attract talent, while providing WFH, better bonuses, healthcare, and childcare packages.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>labor crisis<\/strong> is here to stay well till the third quarter of the year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/research\/2022-workplace-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glassdoor<\/a>), with many women missing from workforce as well. A current 15-year high talent shortage (ManpowerGroup Survey) requires the recruitment issue to be addressed by expanding to a global talent pool.
